Essay Contest at National Academy of Enginnering Washington

The EngineerGirl! Engineering Innovation Essay Contest encourages the students to evaluate an engineering product. The contest is to bring to the picture the engineer’s mind when designing a new product. It takes creativity as well as attention to details and design requirements. Often engineers will use an object as an example and then make improvements for safety, function, or attractiveness. Sometimes a design works best when it is simple, and other times it requires complicated calculations.
The contest provides students an opportunity to evaluate an engineering product by choosing one of the three images .Based on the object in the image the following questions may be answered:


1. What is it? What do you think it might be used for?  
2. What are the most important features of the design?
3. What was the engineer’s role in making this product and what engineering principles were used?

 The contest is open to individual girls and boys in each of three categories. 
1. 3rd grade to 5th grade (Ages 8-11) - 500 words
2. 6th grade to 8th grade (Ages 12-14) - 750 words
3. 9th grade to 12th grade (Ages 15-18) - 1000 words

The essays will be judged on the basis of Organization of topics, the insight topics provide and usage of language.
