Shelford's law of tolerance
A law proposed in 1911 by V. E. *Shelford, stating that the presence and success of an organ¬ism depend upon the extent to which a complex of conditions is satisfied (e.g. the climatic, topographic, and biological re quirements of plants and animals).
The absence or failure of an organism can be controlled by the qualitative or quantita¬tive deficiency or excess of any one of sev eral factors which may approach the *Jimits of tolerance for that organism.
